Grieving losses: Fire in Mt Lawson State Park, Victoria

We visited this Sate Park in January 2012 on a day when we also ventured into the Burrowa-Pine National Park, as they are close to each other. However a lightning strike started a fire here earlier this month and sadly burnt a large area.

Back on the Murray Valley Highway, we travelled further west through Koetong and took the Firebrace Track past the trestle bridge we had viewed the other day and up to the summit of Mt Lawson. And after ambling around through the forest to attain an altitude of over 800 metres, we began to rise rapidly to reach just below the 1,041 metre summit.

A walking track looped us around the summit for 1.3 kms, over and between huge granite boulders and rock faces, making for interesting formations. Although it was a bit hot, a cool breeze fanned our faces and the views were amazing as each window between vegetation, or over rock platforms, gave us new vistas to all points of the compass. We could see the ranges we had travelled through from Omeo, the back waters of Lake Hume, Mt Burrowa and its ranges, and down into various valleys.

We returned to the Murray Valley Highway after I had been astounded by the amount of droppings that the two horses we had seen earlier could leave on the road and, in fact, we passed the horses and riders again just before Koetong.

Our final sight-seeing for the day was 2 kms off the highway and through pine plantations to Lawrence Lookout (gravel again). This high point gave us great views to the east and back to Mt Lawson, and hazy views of the Main Range (including Mt Kosciusko).

Remember: Be the one who nurtures and builds. Be the one who has an understanding and forgiving heart, who looks for the best in people. Leave people better than you found them. Gratitude App
